Moving to Austin and looking for an area that accesses great rides

vtgator writes "I am roadie and moving to Austin and want to find an area that is close to work which will be in the Arboretum, and also be able to access roads that are good for road rides, or at least roads that can get me to good riding. Basically I really do not want to drive to get good riding in.
thanks"

If you work near the Arboretum area, you might want to rent or buy in the neighborhoods along Jollyville Road, or between Duval Rd and Balcones Woods. This is an excellent jumping off point for the hills to the west or the flatter vistas to the east. Loop 360 is bikeable to the south (maybe not for novices but certainly for most roadies), Jollyville is bikeable parallel to 183, Duval/Gracy Farms takes you across Mopac to the East, and Duval/Amherst takes you to Parmer, which is bikeable all the way to I-35. Parmer is a good jumping off point for Pflugerville, Round Rock and points north. If you want just a short ride with steep hills, that's only a couple of blocks off of almost anywhere on Jollyville Rd.
There are numerous grocery stores in that area and a lot of bike shops as well. The Arboretum/Gateway area is notable because (depending on your family situation etc) you can possibly get by there without owning a car at all!
Arboretum/Gateway has numerous Capital Metro connections. All the buses here have racks for two bikes. If you're inclined to ride the roads to the south or southwest of Austin, hop on the #3 bus and take it to the other side of town, which is the jumpoff point for Buda, San Marcos, New Braunfels, and San Antonio.

It makes a perfect circle on a very popular ride called the Dam Loop and also makes it easy to get to Parmer, another popular road for riding. There are any number of good rides branching off those routes.
On North 183, turn South on Mcneil/Spicewood Springs Road. Basically anything back there would qualify. Jollyville, as the previous poster mentioned, is right in that area as well. |
