Central Austin: Biking to UT Campus from 38th and Guad
Posted on Monday, July 14, 2008 @ 22:23:18 EDT by Admin

Advice Needed star1827 writes "I want to ride my bike during the school year from the north side of 38th between Guad and Lamar to the UT Campus. Is it safe to ride down Guadalupe? Do people usually use the sidewalk or do they ride in the street? Thank you for your opinions as I haven't ridden my bike to campus or on such public roads before."

Speedway is a great choice to UT from Hyde Park area and has bike lanes. Duval works as well but has more of an incline. Both go straight to UT from the north side of campus.

As mentioned in the previous comment, Speedway and Duval are both excellent choices. If you're headed to the west or south side of campus, you can also go south through the maze of short streets, one way streets and alleys between Guadalupe and Lamar. Right now (2008) there is a lot of construction in that area so some flexibility is required if you ride in that area.

It's perfectly legal to ride in traffic on Guadalupe and I've done it occasionally, but it's not at all a pleasant experience. You have to watch traffic coming from too many directions at once. Most of the motorists there seem to be stressed out and prone to sudden turns and sideways moves.

I prefer to not ride on the sidewalks near campus. Too much pedestrian activity there to suit me, and also too much "sidewalk furniture" such as fire hydrants, light poles, bus stops, etc. But you do see lots of BMXers there riding alley cat style, if you want to be one of them just do what they do and hope for the best...
