South Austin: Biking between South Congress at Stassney and UT?
Posted on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 @ 18:08:15 EDT by Admin

Advice Needed lauralou writes "Hello,
I am a novice cycler, and I'm planning to get a bike this summer so I can start biking to school at UT in the fall. My house is at South 1st/South Congress and Stassney. I'm wondering how safe it is to bike all the way up South Congress to downtown, then over to Lavaca and up to Guadalupe. South 1st looks way too dangerous, but is South Congress much better? Any route suggestions are appreciated.

thanks!
Laura "

My favorite low traffic route between south central Austin and downtown is Bike Route 31 on the city's bike map [PDF]:

http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/bicycle/downloads/bicycle%20map_07.pdf

Going north, the basic idea is to cross Ben White at Banister, curve east and cross the railroad track, go north on Garden Villa, take a little jog to pick up South 5th, then through neighborhood streets to Auditorium Shores. Cross the river on the pedestrian bridge at South First.

This is a key bicycle corridor through the south central area. It's mentioned on several different threads here, so it's worth looking through them all to pick up some good route variations.

I'm not sure how to make a direct link to an excellent posting on another thread made by "Anonymous" on April 26, 2005, so I'll just copy it in here:

"I have a super nice route...very low traffic. I am coming from S. 1st and Slaugher. My neighborhood dumps out at Dittmar and Palce. So I'll start there. You should be able to follow along on any online map.

"Go E. on Dittmar.

"Left of Forrest Wood Rd.

"Left at deadend on Matthews

"Right on Woodhue

"At dead end Right on Turtle Creek

"Left on Emerald Forest (more traffic here but there is a bikelane) this will turns into Vinson and takes you all the way until it dead ends on St. Elmo

"Left on St. Elmo

"Right at Dead end...immediate offcamber left after...just follow the road.

"Right on Banister...this will take you over 290/71

"After 290 the road curves around and drops down...after the railroad tracks take your first left...Garden Villa, but the sign's missing.

"Right at deadend on barton skyway

"Left on 5th St.

"Here you have a few options 1)go all the way down 5th st. to barton springs road...there is a light here and yuo can cross the road and access the hike an bike trail

"2) take a right on Annie st. and then a left on Bouldin....this will drop you out on Barton Springs road right in front of Palmer events center.

"From either of the 2 options...ride across the ped bridge on the w. side of s. 1st. Continue straight up Guadalupe (on the sidewalk here).

"Left on 2nd st.

"Right on San Antonio

"Left on 3rd

"R. on Nueces......this street runs the length of downtown and has very little traffic...just watch the parked cars...from here you can get anywhere you need to.

"I hope this helps. It is a very nice and lesiurly route with a few hills on the way home. Its about 10+ miles (to the capital...where i work) and takes about 35-45 min. I ride it most of the week...see you out there....don't ask where the good trails are...I keep those close to my chest."

Hey lauralou...,
Congress congress straight in is a good route into dountown. There is a bike lane most of the way and it is relatively free of glass and such. I wanted to be sure that nothing had changed so I made the ride this morning and it should be fine. I too live about a block from SoCo and Stassney so if you are looking for other routes to different places from here let me know.
I looked at route 31 that the other user posted and it looks like a pretty nice ride. I'll give it a shot pretty soon. But for getting to campus Congress is pretty much a straight shot in. I'd look at taking maybe fourth to san jac. from congress once you get downtown. It is easier than traffic around the capital.
Good luck,
sst
