South Austin: Slaughter, Brodie to I-35
Posted on Saturday, September 15, 2001 @ 16:39:10 EDT by Admin

Road Evaluations Joel writes "Much of this section is 6 lanes. Short section between West Gate and Manchaca Rd. is 4 lanes with significant narrowing just west of Manchaca Rd. With the amount of pavement and acceptable level of traffic during off peak hours, it should be an ideal east-west crossing in the southern part of town. This illusion of safety has been shattered too often by SUVs not moving out of right lane. Be careful.

Location: South Level: Hard Traffic at Rush Hour: Very Heavy Traffic Off Peak: Moderate Alternate Routes: To the north is Davis and Dittmar. Davis from Brodie to Manchaca doesn't leave room for a bike and 2 vehicles to pass each other and too often no one is willing to wait. "

Just to update this information, Slaughter now has bike lanes from Brodie to I-35.

There are no bike lanes, wide outside lanes or shoulders on Slaughter between Mopac and Brodie. (Rant: Why oh why in the year 2008 are they still allowed to design minimal roads and bridges like that, especially when there's so much extra room to work with??) There are intermittent rideable sidewalks that can be used if you want to do that, but it will probably be necessary to ride in a traffic lane at some point on that stretch of road.
