North Austin: Arboretum to Round Rock
Texas-Todd writes "I live in NW Hills near the Arboretum and work in Round Rock. The route I take is Steck to Burnet, Burnet to Braker, Braker to Metric, Metric to Parmer, Parmer to Lamar, Lamar up to Howard (you have to go on the side of the road to the actual light), cross under the bridge and take the feeder road the rest of the way up to Greenlawn (and over to Dell for me). The best areas with a bike lane are Metric and Parmer...the rest of them you are riding with traffic so be careful. On the way home I cross I-35 by taking Greenlawn back to the feeder of I-35 north, ride up to the intersection and take the turn around bridge. I head down the feeder back to Howard and retrace my route to NW Hills."

maybe someone who lives in the area has some specific suggestions for
the best way to go without getting run over?

North Austin: Getting to the domain
Joel writes "Lloyd said in a post on austin bikes:
As far as riding to The Domain goes, there really are no great routes
connecting The Domain or Gateway areas. If you are coming from the
south, riding north east of Metric might get you to Gracyfarms where
you can turn west to Gault which enters the Domain on its north-east
side. If coming from the north, you have to ride on Burnet for a
little bit. Once in the Domain the speed limit is 25 so sharing the
road or taking a lane is no problem.

North Austin: Fairfield Ln to cross US 183
Joel writes "On the Austin Bikes list, someone had an alternative to the scary part North of US 183
I'll also recommend avoding the worst of the Ohlen/183 intersection. Heading north, you can take a right on Contour to hook up with Fairfield, cross 183 on Fairfield, and hook up with Parkfield that way.
The reason to do this is that, when heading north on Ohlen, the driveway into Target just past 183 provides a very high risk of getting hit with the right turn of doom.
and a second
I too use Fairfield for crossing 183. One detail about my route is that I take my second left off of Fairfield to head up to Ohlen. By doing this I can make an easier "jog left" crossing of Ohlen (turn left onto Ohlen then turn right off of it). If I make my first left off of Fairfield, I must make my left turn off of Ohlen, meaning a possible wait in the left lane and a turn across oncoming traffic.
After crossing Ohlen, I take Hunter's Trace up to Colony Creek, and pick up Parkfield there. I admit that I do not like riding on Parkfield northbound (uphill) between Rundburg and Rutland (downhill is no problem), and will often (should time allow) turn left at the stop sign on Quail Meadow, using QM to cross Rund and Rut, then cut back to Parkfield.
Two common destinations for me in this area are Regal Plastics at Metric & Rundburg (for coroplast, Lexan polycarbonate sheets, and reflective vinyl), and T&S Seafood Restaurant (for dim sum) at Ken & Lamar.

North Austin: Peyton Gin
Joel writes "On Austin Bikes, someone commented on Peyton Gin and alternatives in the area:
Here is an alternative to taking Payton Gin Road (a rather busy and narrow street that is prone to speeding) to Parkfield:
Just before you get to the intersection of Payton Gin Road & Olen (the first traffic light)
On your left is a convenience store
Cut across the parking lot of the convience store and cross Payton Gin Road
There is a neighboorhood street almost directly in front of you.
Take that to the end. It is wide, slow and not busy.
At the end of the road turn right.
Follow this road to Parkfield and turn left.
Sorry I don't know the names of these steets and don't have time to Google it.
This route is shorter and safer. (be careful crossing Payton Gin Road after the convience store)
Parkfield has bike lanes almost the entire way.

North Austin: Round Rock to Braes Ridge & Belfast
Joel writes "This route came from the Austin Bikes list:
I commute from Round Rock to Braes Ridge & Belfast and I go down #47
until it connects with #30, head east until I hit #57, and then go
north. If anyone knows a better way, please please please let me know.
So if you don't have an Austin bike map, it's:
Parmer west to Metric
Metric south to Bittern Hollow
Bittern Hollow to Parkfield
Parkfield to Fairfield
Fairfield east to Lamar
Cross Lamar and continue east on Elliott
Elliott to Georgian
Georgian south (up a long but easy hill) to 183
Under 183 and Georgian becomes Northcrest
South on Northcrest to Crestland
West on Crestland to Guadalupe
South on Guadalupe to 51st (alternately you can turn south on
Airport...I've just started doing this)
East on 51st
North on Berkman
It's about 18.5 miles for me, but using Airport seems to take off 1.4
miles. Traffic is great along this stretch (I think the worst part
would be getting to Metric, but I've never ridden down Parmer on my
bike).
----
There were a few responses like
Depending on the time of day and where on Berkman you're trying to get to, I would take Guadalupe to St. Johns, and then east (left) on St. Johns all the way up to Berkman rather than going south all the way to 51st. It's a straighter shot up St. Johns, but there is no bike lane or shoulder and the traffic can be somewhat heavy at certain times of the day -- but only on the stretch from Guadalupe to IH35. East of 35, it's smooth sailing.
Otherwise this is a pretty good route. If you don't mind sidewalking it, it's actually much, much faster to stay on the sidewalk on Lamar from Fairfeld and just go up Lamar to Morrow, then left on Morrow to Guadalupe (2 blocks). Use the east side sidewalk, if you're going to do this, however.
---
I'd second this. If you cut east two blocks before St. John's you can avoid a couple of blocks of traffic. Then most of the worst part of St. John's is a school zone so everybody slows down in theory. I haven't had any problems turning left onto St. John's, but I haven't tried this during the worst of rush hour.
Also, I know sidewalks are bad, but traffic does get backed up by the lights at I-35. You can bypass it on the sidewalk and you can stay on the sidewalk over the bridge to stay out of the way of everyone trying to make the second light. Like Patrick said, once you're past I-35 it's cake.
---
Here's one small refinement: Fairfield to Jamestown Dr. to Thurmond St. to Lamar and then hop on the east sidewalk of Lamar allows you to spend less time on Lamar with only one intersection to cross before you get to 183.
----
Thanks for this. I mapped the route, and it can be viewed here...
http://tinyurl.com/cl368
----
Talk about zeitgeist. I was just mapping the alternate route from Round
Rock to Berkman, using St. John's.

North Austin: Metric Blvd to Pflugerville
Joel writes "This post came from the Austin Bikes list and from the ACA forum post: "To bike to Pflugerville I took the following route:
Ride north up bike route 47 to Metric Blvd. past Parmer Lane
Cross W. Howard Ln. where it becomes Thermal Drive
Go east on Wells Branch Parkway West
Cross I-35 where it becomes 1835 into Plugerville
This route was decent at 7:30-8 am on a Saturday morning. There was a bit of a tight squeeze near I-35.
...
I decided to take Dessau Rd. to Breaker Lane back. It seemed more heavily traveled than the morning route but it may have been the time of day. It was, after all, a Red route. "
