Advice Needed South Austin: Biking between South Congress at Stassney and UT?

lauralou writes "Hello,
I am a novice cycler, and I'm planning to get a bike this summer so I can start biking to school at UT in the fall. My house is at South 1st/South Congress and Stassney. I'm wondering how safe it is to bike all the way up South Congress to downtown, then over to Lavaca and up to Guadalupe. South 1st looks way too dangerous, but is South Congress much better? Any route suggestions are appreciated.

thanks!
Laura "

Routes to get from one place to another South Austin: 78748 to 78754

texyak writes "I'm looking for a fast, safe bicycle commute from South Austin (Slaughter & Bilbrook, to be exact) up to Ridgepoint Drive near the 183/290 interchange in Northeast Austin. I've mapped a couple of routes that are around 16-18 miles each way, but I'd have to use Cameron Rd and 290 East and I'm frankly a little leery of both. However, if it has to be done, it has to be done. The shortest route I could come up with is here (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1992316). I'd really appreciate any input and advice from the rest of the highly knowledgeable and experienced cycling commuters out there. Thanks in advance!"

Road Evaluations South Austin: South Lamar

Joel writes "This was posted on the Austin Bikes List about S.Lamar

On South Lamar heading north toward the river -- a downhill roll -- I always ride on the road. You'd better not yell at me (if you ever get the opporunity to pass) because I'm gonna catch up at the next light!. :-)

If I'm heading up hill, I seek out the sidewalk, or better yet, a different street with shade, like South 5th for instance. Lately it seems that S 5th has nearly as much traffic as Lamar when folks are heading home from work. "

Routes to get from one place to another South Austin: Manchaca South to 38th and Lamar

Joel writes "From Austin Bikes

I am definitely no expert on S. Austin routes, but looking at a map, it looks like there's lots of connectivity in some of those neighborhoods. For example, it looks to me like one could get across Slaughter either via Gail -> Briar Ridge, or via Curfew. Then, I might consider crossing W. Cannon via West Gate (although I don't know what traffic's like on West Gate -- or any of these streets, for that matter). Finally, I'd probably cross Ben White via Banister, then take Banister around to take a left on Garden Villa, then jump over to S. 5th street. From there, it's pretty much straight north to Barton Springs (5th becomes Dawson). I usually hang a left on Barton Springs and then take a right just before Lamar. Cross via the Pfluger bike/ped bridge, ride the hike/bike trail to maybe 100 yards to the trail heading north, up Shoal Creek. Then, I hop onto West and head north. From there, there are several surface street routes, or you can jump onto the SCB trail/sidewalk and head up parallel to Lamar all the way to the hospitals.

>From Dawson north, I can attest that the routes aren't that bad, for the most part. Pretty nice, especially if the weather's nice.

Comment on this

The two times I went on long rides out of town to the south, I used
Manchaca for a good chunk of the southern part of Austin. There's a long
stretch with very wide striped shoulders - and north of that, you have the
option to hop over to Emerald Forest (route 31) which was really nice.
Stassney was a good connector, but I think that some of Manchaca south of
Stassney reverts to 4 narrow lanes with no shoulder.

Lane's comments about Route 31 between Ben White and the river are spot-on
as usual. A very nice ride overall.

Advice Needed South Austin: safest route from town lake to gaines ranch loop

Anonymous writes "Hi. I'm looking for a safe way to go from the lamar pedestrian/bike bridge over town lake, south to the gaines ranch loop area. Gaines ranch loop is right next to where Mopac hits Southwest Pkwy. You have to go north from Best Buy, over the bridge that goes over Mopac, and you're there.

Thanks."

Routes to get from one place to another South Austin: Need help finding route downtown!

Anonymous writes "I live at The Village of Western Oaks right off Davis Lane. I work on West Sixth street. I ride a road bike. I would LOVE to figure out a way to ride to work w/ out getting killed. I'm used to riding on South Mopac (with light traffic) and Slaughter. I don't mind the route taking me a little longer, or some hills, although flat would be my preference, but I would take hills anyday over heavy traffic. Thanks for the help! I wouldn't need to be at work until 9:30, showered and ready to go. I am an early riser, so no problem leaving early."

Routes to get from one place to another South Austin: Downtown to 1826 and 290

Joel writes "This request came from the austin bikes list..."I'm looking for some route advice as I try and figure out my way to a meeting this Saturday. I have to go to 7900 FM 1826 (looks like it's at 1826 and 290 in southwest Austin). The Austin bicycle map doesn't quite reach this far, but from what I can tell, it looks like if I got south to Slaughter (I'm coming from downtown)...

Road Evaluations South Austin: Slaughter, Brodie to I-35

Joel writes "Much of this section is 6 lanes. Short section between West Gate and Manchaca Rd. is 4 lanes with significant narrowing just west of Manchaca Rd. With the amount of pavement and acceptable level of traffic during off peak hours, it should be an ideal east-west crossing in the southern part of town. This illusion of safety has been shattered too often by SUVs not moving out of right lane. Be careful."
