Routes to get from one place to another Southwest Austin: Downtown to Oak Hill

Joel writes "Someone asked on the ACA list about getting from downtown to Oak Hill. Here was the response

Now back to the question. I always take the Ben White Service Road to
Lamar and head north using Lamar till I get to the Pfluger bridge at
Riverside.

Map

I'm comfortable going at a decent clip with traffic on South Lamar
descending to the river. As they say, "Your mileage may vary." I only
use Lamar going downhill (north) where it's possible to haul buns downhill.

If you're looking for a more serene route (with shade too), continue
past Lamar on the service road crossing Ben White at Banister. Take a
left (North) onto Garden Villa which eventually leads you to South 5th
which you can take all the way to Barton Springs Road.

When returning up hill back to Oak Hill, I always use this South 5th,
Garden Villa, Banister route.

And since serene is the operative concept, it's possible to avoid Ben
White altogether if you take Jones Road, there's a connecting street
from the strip mall area on Brodie at Ben White that goes behind Burger
Center to Westgate and then you hop over to the the street behind
Central Market taking that to Banister, crossing Ben White (as above)
and continue the Garden Villa, South 5th & so forth.

Map

That said, I usually just take the more direct route, the feeder road on
Ben White, rather than Jones Road.

All sorts of ways to get to downtown from the town lake. I'll leave that
to you...

Road Evaluations Southwest Austin: Beware - Red Necks on Hamilton Pool

Anonymous writes "My wife and I moved here from Maine, and are avid and courteous cyclists. We moved to the Drippings Springs/Bee Caves area. I was surprised and angered one day cycling to have been hit in the helmet with a flying beer bottle from a red neck driving a late model brown Chevrolet pickup truck. In 12 years of cycling, this has never happened to me! This occurred on Hwy 12 in between Dripping Springs and Hamilton Pool. I later saw a Sheriff who happened to be on the road (Travis county), and he shrugged it off by saying "...if it were up to me I wouldn't even allow you cyclists on these roads...this is red neck country..." I'm tempted to post his name. This incident has happened 2 more times (white Chevy pickup and blue Chevy pickup - what's up with the Chevy pickups???) on Hamilton Pool Road and 962 (west of Hamilton Pool). The riding out here is beautiful, but this is a warning - be careful. Who knows how far these guys will take it if there is no one looking. What's their problem anyhow?"

Roadie Exercise Routes Southwest Austin: Southwest Exercise Routes

Joel writes "In response to a request for fun rides in southwest Austin, there were some replies:

I often follow something that incorporates Scenic Blvd,
Exposition, Mt Bonnell, and I usually make it a point to stop at
Central Market or Whole Foods as a destination or pit stop or to pick
up a few goodies.
http://tinyurl.com/czla8
(you'll need to use Mozilla, Firefox or Safari cuz this page link
breaks in Explorer) -- The blue path is the general route, but no need
to stick with it.

If you are asking about points farther South and West:
There are some nice places (and challenging hills) further south &
west like Lost Creek Blvd and Barton Creek Blvd but they involve
connections on Beecave Road and Loop 360 which I've grown to hate
because of all the cars. If you're up to that sort of route then you
might be interested in West Lake Blvd, Red Bud, Toro Canyon etc.

---

I don't understand the current obsession cyclists have with 620, SW Parkway, 360, etc. I guess my idea of a great relaxing ride isn't a wide shoulder with cars and trucks whizzing by. I greatly prefer East Austin - heading out toward Decker Lake or out Burleson Rd. back behind Bergstrom Airport. Less shoulder, but also less traffic and a heck of lot better scenery than strip-malls McMansions. And I've found the motorists much friendlier out East than west. I've NEVER ridden 1826 without some sort of "incident" - the worst being a beer bottle thrown at me, the very least some "kind words." I still cycle out there but only when I'm meeting other folks that insist. Further South seems even worse. I think you're required to hate bikes for Public Office in Williamson County.

You can cross from the West part of town to Burleson via Woodward. From the north (and thanks to several here for helping me with this route) take 51st Street out eventually getting on Loyola and Decker Lake Rd. After that it's quiet, clean, and open roads as far as you want to go. You can actually hear a vehicle coming up on you a quarter mile in advance. I've never had a bad incident out there.

Road Evaluations Southwest Austin: US 290 between Sunset Canyon and Circle Drive

Joel writes "On the AustinCycling Forums, someone wrote..."I've been out there a few times when I was out of energy and it was the flattest way to get back to Oakhill, it wasn't too bad, but it was on weekends during the middle of the day. And it was before Dripping Springs became a bedroom community.

Not sure I'd want to be out there when everyone else is commuting. "

Roadie Exercise Routes Southwest Austin: Ride for the Roses Route

Joel writes "Robert Farr over at the ACA list ran across the Ride for the Roses Ride Map over at txinfo.com. This is the route used when RFR started and ended at Zilker Park (recently it has started/ended at the Travis County Expo Center). It includes the 50 and 100 mile routes. These routes go Southwest through Dripping Springs and Wimberly."

Road Evaluations Southwest Austin: FM 1826

joel writes "Wayne from the Austin Bikes mailing list had this to say about FM1826... Just a heads-up, for those of you who do not ride this route frequently:
1. 1826 was resurfaced last summer. The added layer makes the pavement drop-off 6 -12 " in places. Don't flirt with these - stay well on the road or get off. Also, be aware of overtaking vehicles. I've witnessed 2 incidents of drivers getting their right-side wheels off the pavement & nearly losing control (flipping) of their vehicle.
2. Be aware of vehicles when you are rounding Deadman's curve on S. Mopac (just west of the Wildflower Center. Especially east bound!
3. Don't be lulled into a false sense of safety by the new light at LaCrosse Ave. - the elevation & aspect on the north bound side of S. Mopac is bad. I've seen 1 car blow throw the light, another realize there was a light and slam on the brakes and skid into the intersection. (lucky - no cross traffic!)
3. Watch out for car & motorcycling racing. The long, flat stretch from Deadman's curve to 1826 is a favorite on the west bound side of S. Mopac.

Road Evaluations Southwest Austin: Slaughter, 1826 to Brodie

Joel writes "Road Comments: Two lanes each direction with curbs, no shoulders. During rush-hour traffic you take your life in your own hands. Sidewalks from MoPac to Brodie primarly on the south side but condition and usability vary greatly. Traffic light on weekend mornings, however I have had many red-necks buzz by, moving only far enough to the left to keep their mirrors from hitting me. "
