Routes to get from one place to another South Austin: 78748 to 78754

texyak writes "I'm looking for a fast, safe bicycle commute from South Austin (Slaughter & Bilbrook, to be exact) up to Ridgepoint Drive near the 183/290 interchange in Northeast Austin. I've mapped a couple of routes that are around 16-18 miles each way, but I'd have to use Cameron Rd and 290 East and I'm frankly a little leery of both. However, if it has to be done, it has to be done. The shortest route I could come up with is here (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1992316). I'd really appreciate any input and advice from the rest of the highly knowledgeable and experienced cycling commuters out there. Thanks in advance!"

Routes to get from one place to another North Austin: Arboretum to Round Rock

Texas-Todd writes "I live in NW Hills near the Arboretum and work in Round Rock. The route I take is Steck to Burnet, Burnet to Braker, Braker to Metric, Metric to Parmer, Parmer to Lamar, Lamar up to Howard (you have to go on the side of the road to the actual light), cross under the bridge and take the feeder road the rest of the way up to Greenlawn (and over to Dell for me). The best areas with a bike lane are Metric and Parmer...the rest of them you are riding with traffic so be careful. On the way home I cross I-35 by taking Greenlawn back to the feeder of I-35 north, ride up to the intersection and take the turn around bridge. I head down the feeder back to Howard and retrace my route to NW Hills."

Routes to get from one place to another Central Austin: Kealing Middle School Route

Joel writes "In response to this question on the Austin Bikes List:

I would like to ride to Kealing Middle School (1607 Pennsylvania Ave.)
with my daughter and I would like to figure out the lowest stress way to
ride there (i.e. least traffic hazards as a first priority, followed by
least potholes and other obstructions). I don't mind riding more distance
for a better route.

I know the best way to 34th and Speedway. How do I proceed from there?

I'm guessing it is best to cross 35 on 26th/Dean Keaton, then drop back to
Leona (perhaps on 22nd) and take it South to the school. If you know the
area, please feel free to give me advice about a better way to go. Like
"Go right on XXX, turn left on YYY, etc."

The trip will be during early rush hour and returning in the early afternoon.

The responses were

If you ride Dean Keaton to cross over, I would suggest taking a right at Red
River and riding over to Manor Road and crossing there. The Dean Keaton way
past Red River is not awful - but can be a little stressful as traffic speed
seems higher and people are entering into the right lane to merge onto the
access road to get to IH35.

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1096693

Also note: you could avoid Dean Keaton and ride through Campus. Speedway to
E 24th to San Jacinto Blvd to E 23rd to Robert Dedman Dr to Manor and
across. I've not done this - might need to test it out. Course riding
through campus isn't always a picnic either. But traffic is slow moving.

Depending on where you are starting from, you could also consider riding
over to Hancock Shopping Center, you can exit the shopping center on the
IH35 side and cross under (by Sears, there is a light) then, on the other
side cut through the parking lot of what used to a Outdoor store or Academy
(heading south). This puts you on Wilshire Blvd. Take that up to Cherrywood
Rd and that's a nice ride over also. Neighborhood, tree cover, low traffic
and wide streets.

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1096700

Hope this helps some. Have fun riding....

and

One nice thing about gmap-pedometer is the little
graphic about elevation

This map
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1096693
has a valley near San Jacinto and Dean Keaton and then
another valley at Kealing

whereas
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1099413
which goes 34th to Harris to 32nd to Lafayette
has only one valley at Kealing

I don't know which is more pleasant or safe or
whatever, but they illustrate how nice the elevation
graphic can be.

Routes to get from one place to another West Austin: Lost Creek to Anderson Mill & Parmer

Joel writes "In response to this question on the austin bikes list:

I am considering commuting from my home in Lost Creek (Bee Caves and 360) to 7700 W. Parmer Lane @ Anderson Mill Road (closer to 620 than MoPac). This is an 18.5 mile route. I am interested in a hybrid route that might include some Capital Metro riding. What is the safest route north? I will be commuting M-F, early morning to early evening hours.

The responses were:

Well, this aint pretty, but maybe you could find a few clues in here...

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1122727

Anyway, that's how I would ride the entire route. Not sure exactly
what bus routes you might be able to take advantage of.

and

If you want a hybrid route, you could bike downtown to pick up one of
the NW routes to the Pavilion Park & Ride (near Jollyville & Oak
Knoll) to pick up Lane's route from there. (You don't have to
backtrack through Riata like Lane shows but you did say "safest".)

It's too bad there's no bus along 360!

Routes to get from one place to another Outside of Austin: Avoiding SH 130

Joel writes "On the austin bikes list, here were some suggestions for avoiding SH 130
I've been patiently waiting for Google, Mapquest, and Yahoo to update their maps. If you venture off the beaten path out East, you risk winding up at the end of a long dead-end into SH130. A lot of the popular cycling routes for ACA and the UT cycling club have been impacted around the Manor/Pflugerville area.
Right now, some good places to cross it are:
1. Parmer Lane (underpass)
2. Nez Perce Trace off HW 973 (they've almost completed the permanent replacement which will involve using the 973 bridge. Currently this bridge has no shoulder though.
3. 290 (it ain't purty, but there is a wide shoulder that will take you across 130.

Routes to get from one place to another Central Austin: From North Austin to 6th and Lamar

Joel writes "There was a question on the austin bikes list about how to get from North Austin near Shoal Creek down to 6th and Lamar.

I commute from North Central Austin, down Shoal Creek blvd to where it meets Lamar, then down the long, fast sidewalk along the frisby-golf areas to downtown (is this the legit way to go on a road bike to down town? I doubt it) to where it crosses under Lamar and you're on a bike sidewalk/path (concrete, along Shoal Creek itself). Anyway, I've discovered that there's sand under some of the bridges that just about knock me off my bike no matter my speed. I'm not gonna switch to a fatter tire, as I use my commute as training and I love my road bike.

What's a safe(ish) road route to get to where I'm going at 6th and Lamar? I suppose I could just ride IN the street all the way down Lamar, but this seems scarier than necessary for some reason.

Routes to get from one place to another Southeast Austin: Route to Airport

Joel writes "Tom tried to add this but the site was having problems: Here it is....

ABI Airport from Colorado River and Airport Blvd

This route takes one to the Austin Bergstrom International Airport from
the north across the US 183 river bridge.

The route begins at the sidewalk on the north side of the Colorado
River. This starting point is at the intersection of Cesar Chavez St, E
7th St, Airport Blvd, US 183 / Ed Bluestein Blvd, the Colorado River,
and Levander Loop. It is accessible from all of these roads. The safest
access is from Levander Loop followed by a short walk up a hill.

Out of the 4.3 miles total for the route, only about one mile is on the
multi-lane Bastrop Highway itself (includes US 183 and TX 71). Safety is
nearly maximized with this route, considering this destination's lack of
bicycle-safe routes.

I have not tested this route yet. I plan to do so on New Year's Day
2007. If there are any significant changes warranted, I plan to post
them on this site.

This route is also available at http://tinyurl.com/vmqqf (on ACA's website)

Routes to get from one place to another Southwest Austin: Downtown to Oak Hill

Joel writes "Someone asked on the ACA list about getting from downtown to Oak Hill. Here was the response

Now back to the question. I always take the Ben White Service Road to
Lamar and head north using Lamar till I get to the Pfluger bridge at
Riverside.

Map

I'm comfortable going at a decent clip with traffic on South Lamar
descending to the river. As they say, "Your mileage may vary." I only
use Lamar going downhill (north) where it's possible to haul buns downhill.

If you're looking for a more serene route (with shade too), continue
past Lamar on the service road crossing Ben White at Banister. Take a
left (North) onto Garden Villa which eventually leads you to South 5th
which you can take all the way to Barton Springs Road.

When returning up hill back to Oak Hill, I always use this South 5th,
Garden Villa, Banister route.

And since serene is the operative concept, it's possible to avoid Ben
White altogether if you take Jones Road, there's a connecting street
from the strip mall area on Brodie at Ben White that goes behind Burger
Center to Westgate and then you hop over to the the street behind
Central Market taking that to Banister, crossing Ben White (as above)
and continue the Garden Villa, South 5th & so forth.

Map

That said, I usually just take the more direct route, the feeder road on
Ben White, rather than Jones Road.

All sorts of ways to get to downtown from the town lake. I'll leave that
to you...

Routes to get from one place to another South Austin: Manchaca South to 38th and Lamar

Joel writes "From Austin Bikes

I am definitely no expert on S. Austin routes, but looking at a map, it looks like there's lots of connectivity in some of those neighborhoods. For example, it looks to me like one could get across Slaughter either via Gail -> Briar Ridge, or via Curfew. Then, I might consider crossing W. Cannon via West Gate (although I don't know what traffic's like on West Gate -- or any of these streets, for that matter). Finally, I'd probably cross Ben White via Banister, then take Banister around to take a left on Garden Villa, then jump over to S. 5th street. From there, it's pretty much straight north to Barton Springs (5th becomes Dawson). I usually hang a left on Barton Springs and then take a right just before Lamar. Cross via the Pfluger bike/ped bridge, ride the hike/bike trail to maybe 100 yards to the trail heading north, up Shoal Creek. Then, I hop onto West and head north. From there, there are several surface street routes, or you can jump onto the SCB trail/sidewalk and head up parallel to Lamar all the way to the hospitals.

>From Dawson north, I can attest that the routes aren't that bad, for the most part. Pretty nice, especially if the weather's nice.

Comment on this

The two times I went on long rides out of town to the south, I used
Manchaca for a good chunk of the southern part of Austin. There's a long
stretch with very wide striped shoulders - and north of that, you have the
option to hop over to Emerald Forest (route 31) which was really nice.
Stassney was a good connector, but I think that some of Manchaca south of
Stassney reverts to 4 narrow lanes with no shoulder.

http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/bicycle/d2s.htm

Lane's comments about Route 31 between Ben White and the river are spot-on
as usual. A very nice ride overall.

Routes to get from one place to another Alternates to Speedway

Anonymous writes "Someone asked about UT's closure of Speedway on the Austin Bikes list. Here are some possibilities suggested... Response #1 - Duval
Response #2:
I also live near N. Loop and Burnet. The route that I take to the Capitol is -

- South on Shoal Creek to 41st (the top of the hill), turn left (east)
- 41st to Burnet (here it is residential), turn right
- South on Burnet to 40th
- Left (east) on 40th to Central Market (crossing the landscaping or the gas station parking lot)
- Turn right (south) and go through the parking lot and past the Heart Hospital to the light at 38th and West. Then south on West.
- Left (east) on 34th.
- Cross Guadalupe and right (south) on Hemphill Park
- Left (east) on 30th
- Right (southeast) on San Jacinto and through UT to the Capitol.

You could also take either the Shoal Creek Trail or Medical Parkway to 34th, but that would add a hill and more traffic.

If you start east of Burnet, you could pick up this route by taking Woodrow to 49th, cross Burnet at the light heading west, turn left on Woodview, taking it to Shoal Creek.

Response #3
Jeb has a nice route..., One which I used when I resided on 39 1/2 when I first moved to Austin. Central Market opened just after I moved in, and now nine years later, we are still using parking lots as our commuting routes!!! This will surely not change any time soon.

The signal at West and 38th has improved the route, I will say.

But why NOT turn south on SPEEDWAY?!!!

Because we have not effectively stated as a community, and its organizations, that bicycle transportation is an important and valuable part of the tool-box toward creating a pedestrian (and bicycle) friendly campus.

One happy note, I did hear a reply from Mr. Harkins:

Eric: Understand. We continue to work the bicycle access issue.
Bob

I responded that UT should hire a competent Bicycle Facility Planning consultant to address the Speedway issue, partner with the City of Austin to address broader district issues, and work with the bicycling community to help create that PEDESTRIAN (and bicycle) friendly campus.

You may wish to remind Mr. Harkins that Speedway was an unbroken route from 46th St. and Guadalupe where bike lanes follow north, to the State Capital, Congress Avenue, and Downtown Austin. The closure of Speedway by the University of Texas has replaced a safe, convenient, quiet, direct route with alternatives characterized by high traffic volumes and speed, hills, and near complete lack of bicycle accommodations.

I've mapped these out with the main goal to stay off of Burnet, Braker, 183, and Metric as much as possible, since those are all pretty intimidating roads for an inexperienced cyclist (and frankly, Duval's not all that fun, but at least it has a sidewalk if the traffic is really too heavy). If you can find a shorter route between those two general locations, I really would be very eager to see it.

And just to be thorough, taking Burnet straight there is about 7.3 miles. So from that standpoint, both routes are certainly out of the way.

Routes to get from one place to another West Austin: Avoiding the 2222 Hill

Joel writes "Someone asked about a 2222 bypass on this thread on Bikemojo:

The answer he got was:
What some of us do is take the "Tumbleweed Hill by-pass":

North on 620
Turn right onto Four Points (after HEB)
Turn right onto River Place
Turn Left onto Big View
Turn Left onto Narrow Ridge
Turn Left onto Westminster Glen
Turn left onto City Park*
Turn right onto 2222**

* Newly surfaced road, traffic not TOO fast or heavy. Narrow shoulder for about two miles then, on the long desect, take your lane but watch for sharp turn to left at the bottom of hill.

** wide shoulder, low stress.

Routes to get from one place to another North Austin: Round Rock to Braes Ridge & Belfast

Joel writes "This route came from the Austin Bikes list:

I commute from Round Rock to Braes Ridge & Belfast and I go down #47
until it connects with #30, head east until I hit #57, and then go
north. If anyone knows a better way, please please please let me know.
So if you don't have an Austin bike map, it's:

Parmer west to Metric
Metric south to Bittern Hollow
Bittern Hollow to Parkfield
Parkfield to Fairfield
Fairfield east to Lamar
Cross Lamar and continue east on Elliott
Elliott to Georgian
Georgian south (up a long but easy hill) to 183
Under 183 and Georgian becomes Northcrest
South on Northcrest to Crestland
West on Crestland to Guadalupe
South on Guadalupe to 51st (alternately you can turn south on
Airport...I've just started doing this)
East on 51st
North on Berkman

It's about 18.5 miles for me, but using Airport seems to take off 1.4
miles. Traffic is great along this stretch (I think the worst part
would be getting to Metric, but I've never ridden down Parmer on my
bike).

----

There were a few responses like

Depending on the time of day and where on Berkman you're trying to get to, I would take Guadalupe to St. Johns, and then east (left) on St. Johns all the way up to Berkman rather than going south all the way to 51st. It's a straighter shot up St. Johns, but there is no bike lane or shoulder and the traffic can be somewhat heavy at certain times of the day -- but only on the stretch from Guadalupe to IH35. East of 35, it's smooth sailing.

Otherwise this is a pretty good route. If you don't mind sidewalking it, it's actually much, much faster to stay on the sidewalk on Lamar from Fairfeld and just go up Lamar to Morrow, then left on Morrow to Guadalupe (2 blocks). Use the east side sidewalk, if you're going to do this, however.

---

I'd second this. If you cut east two blocks before St. John's you can avoid a couple of blocks of traffic. Then most of the worst part of St. John's is a school zone so everybody slows down in theory. I haven't had any problems turning left onto St. John's, but I haven't tried this during the worst of rush hour.

Also, I know sidewalks are bad, but traffic does get backed up by the lights at I-35. You can bypass it on the sidewalk and you can stay on the sidewalk over the bridge to stay out of the way of everyone trying to make the second light. Like Patrick said, once you're past I-35 it's cake.

---

Here's one small refinement: Fairfield to Jamestown Dr. to Thurmond St. to Lamar and then hop on the east sidewalk of Lamar allows you to spend less time on Lamar with only one intersection to cross before you get to 183.

----

Thanks for this. I mapped the route, and it can be viewed here...

http://tinyurl.com/cl368

----

Talk about zeitgeist. I was just mapping the alternate route from Round
Rock to Berkman, using St. John's.

Ride north up bike route 47 to Metric Blvd. past Parmer Lane
Cross W. Howard Ln. where it becomes Thermal Drive
Go east on Wells Branch Parkway West
Cross I-35 where it becomes 1835 into Plugerville

This route was decent at 7:30-8 am on a Saturday morning. There was a bit of a tight squeeze near I-35.

I decided to take Dessau Rd. to Breaker Lane back. It seemed more heavily traveled than the morning route but it may have been the time of day. It was, after all, a Red route. "
